Adapting Thomas Middleton’s and Thomas Dekker’s 16th century comedic play of the same name, this musical aims to breath new life into the historical figure of the titular character, Mary ‘Moll’ Frith, for new audiences.
Moll Frith was renowned as a fencer and pickpocket who wore men’s clothes during 16th century England, living a live of freedom during a era which highly frowned upon the breaking of conservative gender roles. The Roaring Girl play examines Moll’s reputation in a fictionalized story of love and adventure. When the two lovers Sebastian Wengrave and Mary Fitz-Allard are unable to receive Sir Alexander Wengrave’s permission for them to wed, they enlist the help of Moll Frith. Featuring colourful characters and comedic mishaps, this fresh new retelling musical is bound to make audiences laugh, while showcasing that non-conforming gender roles were upheld all throughout history, and not just in the present day.
